APS chess team runners up in North Coast grand final
12 Oct 2023
Our chess team travelled to Coffs Harbour to take on St Columba Anglican School in the North Coast chess grand final.
St Columba were looking for revenge, as we had defeated them at the same stage of last year's competition; 5.5 to 3.5
We lost the first two boards, before bouncing back by winning the next two boards, leaving us level at 2-2 at the halfway point. In the return matches we continued to trade wins, finishing the match tied at 4 wins each.
In the case of a tie, a countback is used to determine a winner, with higher ranked boards earning more points per win. This saw St Columba declared the winners with a score of 11 points to 9. They were fine opponents and we wish them every success in the Country NSW quarter finals.
While our team's chess season is now over, we still have the Northern Rivers Individual Championship to look forward to.
Chess club meets every Tuesday recess in The Live Ideas Centre. New members, of any level of ability, are always welcome.
