At Alstonville Public School we value and encourage the learning of our nation's First Peoples culture. We aim to provide our Indigenous and Non-Indigenous jarjum's with cultural experiences from local community members that help strengthen our student's connection to country and our local Bundjalung culture.
Our Jarjum Cultural team representatives meet monthly and also attend local AECG meetings to ensure we are providing culturally appropriate programs and activities for our school, such as the "Sista Speak" program, our Yarning Circle, Bush Tucker Garden and Interschool cultural activities with Alstonville High.
Our Indigenous students are encouraged to be confident, strong and proud of their cultural connections by helping to organise and lead these culturally significant events.
Our calendar at Alstonville Public consists of many cultural celebrations and important days of national recognition.
These include: NAIDOC Assembly and celebrations, National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day, Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week, Indigenous Literacy Day, Elders Day.
Our school also acknowledges the importance of celebrating and engaging with culture on a daily basis with every class starting their day with an Acknowledgement of Country that was written by our Indigenous students and we are implementing Bundjalung language in and around our school.
Excursions are always fun, and we offer a cultural coastal walk with Yidabal Galii Maa as part of our commitment to supporting our jarjum's in connecting to country.
Our door is open, and we warmly welcome any of our families who would like to come and share their culture and knowledge with us or to help us with our cultural celebrations.
