Alstonville Public School update March 7 2022

Dear parents and carers,

To begin with I would like to acknowledge that the current flood disaster that has impacted the wider community is unlike anything we have seen before. This has been a very difficult time with many of us affected in different ways. Support is available if you need it:

It was lovely to welcome our students today as the school became operational again. I thank you for your ongoing understanding last week, and thank the teachers and support staff who have been able to return today. While it was pleasing to pretty much have a “normal” day of learning, it is important to understand that this situation is changing daily. However, Alstonville PS is open and operational. We look forward to seeing our students again!

Sadly, a number of our neighbouring schools cannot say the same. You would be aware of the disasters at Ballina, Lismore, Wardell, Broadwater and Woodburn, and our beautiful public schools in these towns have been badly affected. Some will take many months to be re-established. It looks as though we will soon be “hosting” Wardell PS at our school for the foreseeable future. I am very pleased that we can offer the school’s resources, and I am sure our school community will welcome the WPS students and staff warmly. More details regarding this will be forwarded soon. Further, I know many of us are keen to help (and in fact are helping with the clean-up as we speak), and I know the school’s P&C are looking at fundraising opportunities for those in need. Please hold off on any donations until we are clearer with what is required and how best to do this. However, in the wider sense I know GIVIT.org.au is an excellent organisation in regards to supporting vulnerable people and communities in Australia.

Information regarding rescheduled events such as “Meet the Teacher” and P&C meetings will be forwarded soon.

Please contact the school if you would like further information.
